I was invited by a friend to a breakfast in early 2002. The talk was “Looking Reality in the Eye”. It was an excellent talk that made me think about things I rarely thought about. One statement really hit me in the face -- quoting Drayton Nabors, Richard said, after reading all of the new testament, Drayton concluded, “you are either with Jesus or you are against him.” I was pretty sure I wasn’t in a good spot on that one, so I readily accepted an invitation to participate in an investigative study. Over the ensuing months, the lunches became almost the highlight of my week. I had a lot of questions, and Richard and my friend, who also attended, had a lot of answers. They gave me books and tapes to read and listen to and then we would discuss the following week. Ultimately, my journey was about lessening and/or eliminating barriers to faith, which they did very well, and eventually after several months I wanted to pray to become a Christian.

After becoming a Christian in June 2002, the center continues to have a large and ongoing impact on my life thru weekly Bible studies, offshoot prayer groups, and also the large collection of fantastic CD’s, many of which I have listened to 5-6 times.

It is 1999, 8 days before Christmas, and the test results indicate I have cancer. Twenty four hours later I have had surgery to remove the tumor, the physician has told my wife that I will need to undergo chemotherapy treatment, and he thinks I have about a 50/50 chance of survival from the cancer.

Believe it or not, this was my third primary in the past twenty five years. On reflecting however, it was the first time I ever really began to contemplate my mortality and my relationship with God.

Although I was a believer, I did not have a solid foundation to my beliefs, did not know the Bible, and did not know how to build a relationship with God. At about that time a friend invited me to a breakfast and talk at the Country Club that Richard was hosting monthly. I went to a few more and remember saying to myself, “ok Richard, what do I do now?”. I called Richard and he said he wanted me to go through an investigative study, and then he could place me in a Bible study.

That same Bible study continues to be an integral part of my week. The Center’s ministry helped me to build the relationship I so desperately needed with God.
